Yes, you have an amazing resume, and you’ve interviewed really well! As a matter of fact, I really think you are a good fit for the position. But with as many candidates interviewed for the same position today, I need something more.
To hire you, I need some really good references from you. What I would like to see are some strong references from you to not only verify that you did what you say you did in your last job, but prove it!
Traditionally, Professional Reference Pages were available only upon request. What you need now is a professional reference page that works for you and will stand out above all others.
While it's true that traditional reference pages are a thing of the past, personally, I would be shocked and grateful if I found this along with your resume:
A ‘Fill All Recruiters Requirements’ Reference page.
Even though the newest changes to references pages are adding email addresses, as a recruiter, I still have no idea who John Smith is on your reference page. You’ve given me his email address, but most companies are still looking to talk to a LIVE person to gather valuable information about you.
As the recruiter or hiring manager, I still plan on making a few calls.
But what is this? You’ve given me some valuable information to start off my conversation with John Smith? This is wonderful! Now I know when I call John, I can ask him exactly what type of a performer you are in any given situation. Most likely, I will ask about the projects you have mentioned on your professional references page.
Here is what a Recruiter or Hiring Manager would like to see step by step:
Professional References:
John Smith, Supervisor at XYZ CompanyPhone: 555.123.4567email: jsmith@xyz.net
Now this is the good part. Offer some valuable information to the recruiter or the hiring manager. Remember, they have had hundreds of candidates to sort through, they have narrowed it down to 5 or 6 qualified candidates. They are ready to hire TODAY and are looking for references: a pre: requirement to YOU getting hired TODAY.
So we will add this little golden nugget to your Professional References Page:
John Smith, Supervisor at XYZ CompanyPhone: 555.123.4567email: jsmith@xyz.net John Smith was my immediate supervisor at XYZ. During my time at XYZ, I created, implemented and maintained procedures that assisted in securing crucial relationships to XYZ. John Smith oversaw this project and complimented my professionalism and accuracy.
(or something like that J )
Now, don’t you think that the recruiter will ask John Smith to verify this information? As a Recruiter, I know the recruitment team will start with this valuable nugget that you have placed into your Professional References Page’s treasure chest!
IMPORTANT FACT: It is more likely that John Smith would verify this information that you have provided and will be giving the recruiter or hiring manager some VERY important facts that he/she can present to the hiring manager without John Smith violating any of his company's policies regarding references.
YOU have given the information away! John Smith just needs to 'nod and smile' so to speak. :)
