Today I am going to share a Big Red Flag when dealing with Staffing Agency Recruiters.
Typically when they get on the phone, they will want to hook you in, location and pay are the biggies for most people. They will brag about the company that they are filling the position for and tell you that your skills are a great match for their job (that they receive commission on when they fill it with YOU)! Once they tell you that the pay could be (fill in the blank with exorbitant amount of money here) they will ask what you are making in your current position.
I know, I know, you have heard that you don't have to tell anyone how much you have been making in your previous jobs. This is true BUT! Keep in mind that as much as you don't HAVE to tell what you have made in the past, they don't HAVE to hire you! Or move you on to the next stage stating you may be challenging to work with, and honestly, you probably are if you won't answer their questions!
Anyway, back to the Agency Recruiter. Once he hears that you are making (less than exorbitant amount here), he will then tell you that you ARE missing a few of the skills that they are looking for in the requirements for the position.
UGH! Well, say that up front Mr. Recruiter!
My point is that you want to match the skills that you have to the position posted before applying. This means don't let a recruiter send you for a position that you are not fully qualified for either! You will waste your time in interviews and become disappointed when another regret comes your way.
Instead, feel confident in the positions to which you apply. Keep in mind that we are at the lowest unemployment rate we have been in a really long time and jobs are out there, YOU just have to find them!
